Sleep apnea in children is a disorder in which the children experiences irregular stoppage in breathing or low breathing rate. The tenure of sleep apnea can last from few minutes to few seconds. The occurrence of sleep apnea varies from 5 to 30 times in an hour. The lower breathing cycle is also called as hypopnea. The sleep apnea is detected by a test related with sleep study called as polysomnogram.
The sleep apnea is classified into three main types, first is the central sleep apnea second the obstructive sleep apnea and third one, is more complex and has symptoms of both central and obstructive sleep apnea. The enlargement in tonsils is also indication of sleep apnea is kids. The children face problem in sleeping and the sleep is characterized by restlessness.
Sleep apnea in adults is easier to identify, but is case of children it is very difficult to diagnose it. The children suffering from sleep apnea also have problem of snoring at night. It must also be noted that only 10 to 20 percent of children suffering from sleep apnea snore at night. The kids also show signs of sleepiness during the day time. The kids also exhibit problem in behavior and attitude, the children is not able to concentrate and pay proper attention. The kid suffering from sleep apnea becomes hyperactive and too much aggressive.
The treatment of sleep apnea is done by keeping the sign and symptoms in mind. An ENT specialist checks the tonsils, weight and behavioral pattern of the children. In case of allergy in the nose, a nasal drug is given that improves the condition of nasal passage. In the case the children do not respond to medicine, the surgery is undertaken to treat sleep apnea. The surgery is done to remove the tonsils that have become enlarged.
